The island was visited in following expeditions since 1502, and there are written records of them for the years 1552 and 1557. Ilha Grande (Big Island) belongs to the tamoto´s (natives) nation. In the tupi language, is ipaum guacu, which means Big (Guacu) Island (Ipaum).

Weather

Summer: Tropical climate. Most Downpours, usualy during the afternoon or night, combined (or not) with sunshine. East winds prevail, up to 10 knots. Average temperatures: 28º C / 36º C.

Autumn: Dry weather. Sunny days. Constant winds from South/SW and SE. Temperature: Minimum 20º C Maximum 30º C.

Winter: Lowest temperatures and dry weather, with occasional strong gusts of wind, up to 25/35 knots. Temperature: between 12º C / 25º C.

Spring: Warmer weather with temperatures that varie between 22º C / 30º C. East winds start to prevail, combining with periods of calmness and gusts of wind coming from SW and SE that go diminishing as you go heading towards the summer months.

There are 360 Islands on the Ilha Grande bay, as people use to say here, "...there is an island for each day of the year..." It is an area of incredible beaches, transparent and calm waters. You will be able to enjoy it with your own Yacht or with a rented one, rather those beaches with local community villages and its kindly people, or those sophisticated famous beaches. In Ilha Grande you will find famous ships and expert navigators that decided to stay in the Ensenada of Abraao to enjoy the sailing in one of the most beautiful places in the world. State park of Ilha Grande

This park was created in 1971 and today is being administrated by the SIW (State Institute of Woods). These 4.500 hectares take the shape of a triangle between Abraão, Lopes Mendes and Parnaióca. This park is a public area protected by the law with the objective to get together men and environment. It is forbidden to cut down trees, pick plants, capture or feed animals, exercise any agricultural activity, hunt or fish, the mining exploitation and the occupation for residence, commerce or industry. This means that the environment cannot be predated. The administration headquarters of the Park are in Vila do Abraao.

It was created in 1981 and is being administrated by the State Foundation of Engineering and Environment (SFEE). 3.500 hectares form a rectangle embracing from the point do Drago to Parnaioca, extending until the slope of the mountains. This biological reservation shelters all the ecosystems existent in the coastal of Rio de Janeiro. Perhaps this is the only reservation in Brazil with these characteristics. The objective of the reservation is to preserve the fauna and flora species in danger of extinction. Visitors are not permitted in this biological reservation. Visits must be only for scientific research and they need to be expressly authorized by the SFEE.

Marine state park of Aventureiro

Is near the Biological Reservation and its borders belong to the whole coastal area and the beaches, from Ponta da Tacunduba (Parnaióca) to Ponta do Drago. It is forbidden to fish, hunt and any other alteration of the environment.
